*Mental Health Unit – A Program of Bartlett Regional Hospital

Bartlett Regional Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient mental health services. Our twelve-bed inpatient Mental Health Unit provides treatment for a wide range of hospitalized patients as well as medically monitored detoxification from alcohol and drugs. Bartlett Regional Hospital also provides outpatient mental health services at Bartlett Outpatient Psychiatric Services (“BOPS”) located at 3240 Hospital Dr., just behind the main hospital building. The Hospital Psychiatrists are specialists in psychopharmacology, able to prescribe medication as needed, and well versed in diagnostic clarification and medication management. They treat any of the diagnoses present in the DSM IV, the diagnostic manual for mental health issues.

Assessment: There are assessments done at the Outpatient clinic.  Assessments for detox are done in the Emergency Dept.; for Mental Health, assessments are done by JAMHI Emergency Services clinicians.  Inpatient services on the MHU are well coordinated with patients’ physical and emotional needs fully taken into account.

Treatment: At Bartlett, treatment is individualized based on the specific needs of each person.  We take a holistic, treatment team based approach toward all patients on the inpatient unit.  Outpatient psychiatric services often collaborate with other professionals involved with a patient’s treatment (counselors, physicians, etc.).  All ages are treated through the Outpatient Services (BOPS); the inpatient unit is for adults, but can make special consideration for adolescents to be safe until other arrangements can be made.

Group Therapy: This is an approach to treatment in the therapeutic community milieu of an inpatient mental heal unit.  Typically, these are psychoeducational presentations with group discussion, which informs and provides strategies for health living outside the unit.  Appropriately trained unit staff lead the groups.

*Gastineau Human Services

Gastineau Human Services (GHS) was established in 1965 by the Juneau Council of Churches to meet the alcohol treatment needs of Southeast Alaska through services centered in Juneau, the regional hub. Incorporated as the Gastineau Council on Alcoholism in 1966, GHS board members immediately mobilized local support for the treatment of alcoholism, resulting in the establishment of Juneau's first halfway house. As the region’s needs have changed over the years, GHS has evolved into an umbrella organization for a number of programs centered around the treatment and the care of society’s marginalized people – the addicted, the homeless, the mentally ill, and those involved in the criminal justice system.

Juno House (part of Gastineau Human Services)

Juno House offers transitional (up to two years) supportive housing for adults.  Juno House offers a safe, sober, supportive atmosphere for persons seeking a clean environment to continue the recovery process, leading to permanent housing and employment in the community.

GHS Outpatient Addiction Services

The GHS Outpatient Addiction Services (OAS) offers substance abuse services designed to meet the needs of each individual client.  OAS focuses on the whole person, addressing multiple issues surrounding substance abuse. Following a screening and assessment process, each client works with his or her counselor to develop a treatment plan designed to meet the individual at his or her own level of readiness.

GHS OAS offers screening, assessment, case management, and treatment services at a series of levels created to meet the needs to each individual client. These levels range from Early Intervention for clients who are at risk of developing an addiction, to Intensive Outpatient Services, which provides a more intensive structure.  The duration of treatment at all levels varies depending on the seriousness of a person’s addiction and his or her response to treatment. The OAS program staff strives to provide treatment that is respectful, gender and culture sensitive, strength-based, and responsive to the special needs of clients with mental health diagnosis, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).

Hope provides services to individuals who experience a disability through funding from Medicaid Wavers. The Southeast regional office is located in Juneau, but serves all of Southeast Alaska. During the 2000-2001 year, the regional operations experienced a period of unprecedented growth, which has continued and expanded Hopes presence in the Southeast. This growth had been the result of outreach activity to the small communities located between Ketchikan and Yakutat, as well as the communities of Haines and Skagway. Today the Juneau operation serves 44 individuals with a wide variety of services and supports in the communities of Juneau, Hoonah, and Petersburg. Working closely with regional Tribal representatives, Native corporations and service providers, the Juneau office has firmly embraced the establishment of closer relationships with Native communities. As a result, many Native children and adults received Medicaid Waiver supports, and Hope was able to employ direct care staff in the individuals' own community. Hope currently now has two assisted living home's in Juneau. Hope is continually growing and is always recruiting and hiring direct service professionals.

How a Big becomes a Big (and a Little a Little):

A lot of things have to happen before we make a match. All our Bigs go through a thorough background check and careful interview process. Then we match Bigs and Littles based on location, personalities and preferences. And we provide full support along the way — so that matches can grow into lasting friendships.
